Did you know your cat is still built like a desert hunter? Keeping your cat hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support their overall health, but it’s also one of the easiest things to overlook.
Unlike humans (or even dogs), cats aren’t naturally big drinkers. They’re designed to get most of their moisture from their food, not their water bowl. Here’s why that matters, and what you can do about it starting today.
Your cat’s ancestors, the African wildcat, evolved in dry environments where water was hard to find. Instead of drinking from streams or ponds, they got most of their hydration from their prey, which is around 70% water, similar to wet cat food.
In the wild, running water was the safest water, as it was far less likely to be contaminated than a still puddle. That instinct is still with your cat today, sitting on your sofa.
Cats only take in about 1/10 of a teaspoon of water with each lap. Combined with a naturally low thirst drive, that makes them surprisingly inefficient drinkers.
Many cats don’t feel thirsty until they’re already mildly dehydrated. While that helped their ancestors survive, over time it can put extra strain on the kidneys and urinary system, and it makes meeting daily needs from a water bowl alone a real challenge.
Wet food contains around 70–80% moisture. Dry kibble contains only about 10%. That difference adds up fast for a cat who isn’t inclined to make it up at the bowl.

A healthy cat generally needs 3.5–4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of body weight each day. That includes both the water they drink and the moisture they get from their food.
For a cat eating mostly dry food, that’s a lot of laps at 1/10 of a teaspoon each, which is why so many cats come up short without extra support.
